Description
Note: I am no longer playing LOTRO or doing plugins. Any other competent plugin author is invited to take over maintenance of this and/or any of my other plugins. --Thurallor 6/13/2023

Introduction
This simple plugin displays a large message in the middle of your screen each time a friend logs in or out.

You can specify a list of "special friends"; when these friends login or logout, the message will be shown in an alternate color.

You can optionally display a message when your (non-friend) kinmates log in or out, in a color of your choice.

It has a few other configurable options (please see the Options tab in the Plugin Manager). For a more configurable and versatile alternative, please see LoTRO Alerts.

Installation and Startup
To install:
  • First, unzip the archive. You will get a folder called "Thurallor". Copy this folder into your Documents/The Lord of the Rings Online/Plugins folder. (If you have not previously installed any plugins, you will have to first create the Plugins folder.)
  • Or if you prefer, you may use Plugin Compendium to do the installation.
To load the plugin, use the game's built-in Plugin Manager. This can be found in the "^" menu, at the bottom of the screen. Click the icon, then choose "System" and then "Plugin Manager".

When the Plugin Manager opens, find Friend Alert in the list on the left side, then click "Load" to load the plugin. If you would like the plugin to load automatically each time you login, choose your character's name in the "Automatically Load For" pulldown menu.

Revision History
  • (21-Nov-2022) Version 1.12: (Re-)added support for Russian. Thanks, Pulse!
  • (19-Nov-2022) Version 1.11: Fixes bug due to API change introduced in Update 34. Removed Russian support (which never worked anyway). Reduced the pre-display delay to 1 s. (This is the delay for eliminating duplicate messages for friends who are also kinmates.)
  • (28-Aug-2015) Version 1.10: Updated common files for compatibility with my other plugins.
  • (25-Apr-2015) Version 1.09: Localization update: German translations complete. For French speakers, the plugin will work, but the options panel is not yet translated. For Russian speakers, the "Show kinmates" feature doesn't work, but everything else does.
  • (24-Apr-2015) Version 1.08: Added "show kinmates" option. This allows you to display login/logout messages for your kinmates, even if they are not on your friends list.
  • (21-Apr-2015) Version 1.07: Fixed Russian and French client support (although I still have not translated the options panel).
  • (21-Apr-2015) Version 1.06: You can now configure the color, whether or not to show logout messages, and a "special friends" list.
  • (10-Jan-2015) Version 1.05: If you saw the error message "attempt to index field 'UI' (a nil value)", it is now fixed.
  • (4-Jan-2015) Version 1.04: Oops, the previous version was broken.
  • (4-Jan-2015) Version 1.03: The alert messages will now be displayed in front of eveything else, so you won't miss them if you're looking at the map or a vendor window.
  • (3-Jan-2015) Version 1.02: Added support for français and Deutsch. Improved support for small screens. Now only observing the standard chat channel, to avoid trickery.
  • (2-Jan-2015) Version 1.01: Added Plugin Compendium support.
  • (2-Jan-2015) Version 1.00: Initial release.

Is there a way to move the location of the message on the screen?
You can move it by adding a line to the file
Plugins/Thurallor/FriendAlert/Main.lua
If you would like to move it up or down, add the following line at the end of the file:
Window:SetTop(x)
where x is the number of pixels you want it to move up (negative) or down (positive).

Thanks for that. I got your message about the general patch. It worked perfectly and I just updated the plugin a few minutes ago. So as long SSG doesn't get sold to another company, we should be good.

Here's the error that I'm getting:

[11/19 01:15:59 PM] ...e\Plugins\Thurallor\Common\UI\ColorPicker\Local e.lua:14: table index is nil
[11/19 01:15:59 PM] ...Plugins\Thurallor\Common\UI\ColorPicker\__init_ _.lua:11: Failed to import package "Thurallor.Common.UI.ColorPicker.Locale".
[11/19 01:15:59 PM] ...gs Online\Plugins\Thurallor\FriendAlert\__init__.lua: 10: Failed to import package "Thurallor.Common.UI.ColorPicker".
[11/19 01:15:59 PM] ... Rings Online\Plugins\Thurallor\FriendAlert\Main.lua:1: Failed to import package "Thurallor.FriendAlert".

I'm sure that you can make out what's going on here. I know computers pretty well but my programming skills are lacking.

Thanks for reporting this. I will be releasing a new version shortly, but meanwhile you can use this patch to make it work.

OK, the settings ARE stored in AllServers section. So they are all the same for all toons. But there seems to be a problem when using the VindarPatch. FriendAlert can't load or interpret the loaded settings and reset them to default values. When I use the plugin without that patch it works fine.

The VindarPatch is (or was) necessary for German (and French) clients because of different decimal-separators or anything like that. Don't know if that patch is really needed anymore for any plugin? cant even find that on lotrointerface any more.

I read on other threat that you are aware of that language problem.
Interesting. Yes, the bug requiring the Vindar patch is still present. However, I have my own slightly different way of dealing with the problem in my plugins. I would have thought applying the Vindar patch wouldn't have any effect. I'll check it out when I get a chance.

Thanks for this plugin. I love it.

Works like a charm. Thank you.

I'll send you german strings as PM´

By the way:

would you mind to store the settings account-wide (aka server-wide) instead of per-char? I think that woul make sense for most of us. So I don't need to set this up for all of my toons:

I tried to suggest you to scan the kinship-channel instead of (or in addition to) the standard-channel for "<anyname> logged in" and "<anyname> logged out" or what else the string is in English client, I use the German client. Is it possible in LUA to scan a specified channel?
That is a good idea. I don't know why I didn't think of it. I have now added it.

Unfortunately, if a friend is also a kinmate, you will receive two messages (one in the Standard channel; the other in the Kinship channel). And these messages may occur ~1 second apart. To avoid displaying duplicate messages, I have to delay all message reporting by 2 seconds.

By the way, would you mind translating the options panel into German for me?

It is not possible for a plugin to determine whether a friend is in your kinship. The best I can do is to allow you to specify a list of names of kinship members, and use a different color for those names. This is now added.

I suggest that you make it optional, to show when a friend is going online and/or offline. Personally I would prefer not to get informed when somebody logged out.
Done.

And in addition, it would be nice, if I could optionally get an information when a kin-mate logged in (or out). Maybe in a different color? Or is that already in?

Just found this plugin and installed. Very nice I suggest that you make it optional, to show when a friend is going online and/or offline. Personally I would prefer not to get informed when somebody logged out.
