The Babble Message Filter Window

Description
Babble is a plugin originally designed to reduce the amount of emotes you receive during larger events. Later it has been developed to be able to filter words in other chat channels as well.

It sends only "filtered" messages to your standard chat window, excluding any of the more common messages. The plugin comes with a predefined list of the "usual suspect" emotes from busy social events (dance, clap, cheer, etc.), which will be auto-removed and not shown in your chat window when Babble is enabled.

You can easily add to this, or even remove those emotes you want to see. You can also set up lists to be used with other channels, not just the emote channel. Additionally, you can filter messages from different players, so you can still see all messages directed towards yourself or those delivered by your good friends.

Babble is notified whenever a message is received and, if it doesn’t match a list of "blocked" message, it sends the message to the "Standard" chat channel. This means that, for Babble to be effective, you need to turn off the filter for the relevant chat channel in your main chat window and make sure that the Standard channel is enabled, so that you then only receive the filtered message from Babble. Just right-click on the chat window tab, and you’ll be able to choose which chat channels are displayed in that window.

The latest version of Babble comes with its own chat-style window, which can also receive filtered messages from any of the relevant channels. It can also receive blocked messages too.

It is worth noting that the plugin cannot actually stop messages being received. You would still need to turn off the relevant channel in your filters for the chat window. The plugin is simply re-sending new, filtered, messages to your standard channel.

Installation

Unzip the zip file and move the "Simbo" folder to your "Documents/The Lord of the Rings Online/Plugins" folder

Features
  • You can set up multiple lists of patterns, and pick whatever list you want depending on the situation.
  • Lists can either specify messages to block, or messages to allow.
  • The same list can be assigned to multiple channels.
  • You can set up multiple lists of player names to make exceptions for the blocked/allowed messages.
  • You can specify the colour of the "filtered" messages that Babble sends to the Standard channel.
  • You can also specify that filtered messages go to the new Babble Chat Window.
  • The new Babble Chat Window can also receive blocked messages too.
The latest version of Babble allows both "Allowed" messages, as well as "Blocked" messages. For "Allowed" messages, Babble will allow through any message for the channel that matches a pattern in the list, and block everything else.

For "Blocked" lists, the following applies:
  • If you tick the "Unless From" check box, then the message will be blocked UNLESS the message is from one of the names in the associated name list.
  • If you tick the "Unless To" check box, the message will be blocked UNLESS any of the words in the message text matches a name in the list.
For "Allowed" lists, the opposite applies
  • If you tick the "Unless From" check box, then the message will be allowed UNLESS the message is from one of the names in the associated name list.
  • If you tick the "Unless To" check box, the message will be allowed UNLESS any of the words in the message text matches a name in the list.
Note that you can enter "Me" as a valid name, so you capture see both the messages you write yourself and those directed towards you.

Usage

Babble can be loaded via the in-game Plugin Manager, or with one of the following command line option

/plugins load babble

The following commands are available:

/babble on – Enable Babble (it is on by default once loaded)
/babble off – Temporarily disable Babble
/babble status – Shows the Babble Status Window
/babble list – List the currently blocked emotes

French Client

/babble activé
/babble désactivé
/babble énumérer
/babble état

German Client

/babble ein
/babble aus
/babble auflisten
/babble status

These options are also available via the Plugin Manager, under the “Options” tab for the Babble plugin.

Re: NPC filtering

Lina worked with Simbo and they found a way that gets most of the job done, not quite as well as I was hoping for, as you can only filter an entire NPC name, not by what they say. But still good enough for Drunken Revellers. For anyone else who finds this thread, here's how to do it:

1) Turn on Say filtering (and be sure you have your Says unchecked and Standard checked as usual).
2) Edit your say filtering, and do not turn on Always block NPC chat.
3) For the top dropdown, choose Allow All.
4) Create a list called Noisy NPCs for the bottom dropdown.
5) Add the names of NPCs you want to filter there. Note that this goes by name, so if you filter Townsperson, you will filter everyone in the world called Townsperson.

NPC filtering

Attempting to use Babble to filter selected spammy says from NPCs, without filtering out all other NPC says, and having no luck. (If you've been in the Pony during the Midsummer Festival you can imagine why.)

It seems that if "Always block NPC chat" is selected, all NPC says are blocked, regardless of text; and if "Always block NPC chat" is not selected, NPC chat is not blocked even when it matches (but people saying the same exact text are blocked, so the filter is working).

Is there a way to make this work? Is it even designed to do what I'm trying to do?

Thumbs up Re: Re: Babble Not Loading Automatically?

Not sure how it happened, but you can specify which plugins load automatically for each character:

Open the game's built-in Plugin Manager. This can be found in the "^" menu, at the bottom of the screen. Click the icon, then choose "System" and then "Plugin Manager".

When the Plugin Manager opens, find Babble in the list on the left side. Then choose your character's name in the "Automatically Load For" pulldown menu.

Got it, thank you so much!

Babble used to load automatically upon starting the game, and now has stopped. I have to manually load it every time, on every character. Any idea why?

Hullo Modnar!

Thank you for your comment. I am sorry for not replying sooner, but I don't check this website as often as I used to.

In reply to your comments...

1 - The timestamp issue does indeed sound like a bug. I shall look into making a fix

2 - Multiple pattern lists will be something I need to look into. It could be possible, but the pattern lists would need to be of the same type to avoid conflicts.

3 - I am sure I can increase the limit on the number of tabs

4 - Modifiers should be usable anywhere within the search term as I recall. I will see if I can improve the UI to make this cleared, or maybe have a "help" feature.

Bug: Is the timestamp supposed to be remembered? It opens on the default setting (no timestamp) every time. Saving Settings has no bearing on this.

Suggestion: It would be nice if we could have multiple pattern lists active per chat channel. So, for instance, you could have World set to ignore some users completely (ex: known trolls) and filter out messages with certain keywords (ex: low level chars receiving comments about "Black Steel Keys" - which they can't use). If we could mix and match the different lists, it would allow for the greatest control over chat messages.

Suggestion: Not sure it's possible, but a total of 8 tabs in Babble's own chat window would allow uses to "completely replace" the in-game chat window. (I know they really cannot replace it, but if someone only wanted to use the Babble window this is the closest they can come.) Adding more tabs might be better (to separate all chat into their own window). In-game chat allows 8 windows at present (7 tabs + IMS).

I'm still trying to figure out the search modifiers. I'm not sure if they're allowed to be used as a prefix, suffix, amidst the search term, and/or in combination.
