Description
Alt Tracker

What does it do?
Ever found yourself confused about who is an alt of whom? Wished there was a list you could create that would keep track of those links for you? And even let you add notes to them?

Well that is what this does!
How does it work?
/at shows the window. From there I hope it is self-explanatory. If not, I will post answers after questions!
To show the right hand panel click the green icon.
The window can be re-sized by clicking and dragging the bottom right hand corner.
Note: Changes made in the right hand panel are not applied unless you click "Apply". If you click delete, it deletes this character. Split splits the character from the alt list.
To load the plugin either use a manager (Plugin Manager or Bootstrap) or type /plugin load AltTracker
Any prerequisites?
Yes, you need turbines standard code.
What can it specifically not do, and I shouldn't ask for it?
1. Make pies
2. Link to who is actually online. No, can't do this!
3. Make more pies.
This is a beta plugin, for a beta facility! So, don't expect perfection (yet)
I write these plugins to aid my enjoyment of the game, not to make money or influence people. Please be gentle with comments. I bruise easy.

29/10 Bugfix - Could have two mains, if alts were joined. Display not updating properly. Left over events kept ticking reducing performance.
28/10 Added "Main" tracking. This is an alpha update - I have tested it, but I recommend you back up your settings (under plugindata/account name/server name/all characters) before using!
22/6 Minor Bugfix
21/6 Version Setharnas: Hopefully fixed the bugs. Please note: Base Turbine Plugin must be installed for this plugin to work! See above!
20/6 Added Search Function as requested by Setharnas

I don't get it

Right hand panel? Green Icon?

I just can add chars and alts, not edit, not remove.....
Please help!

EDIT: Ahhh, found it! The green Icon was carefully hidden ,,, and hard to find for a colorblind

*laughs* I wish my PC was that good!

I will put this on the Wish List pile; but I am back at work now and likely to get very busy, and my time is currently spent on SortPack Bags. I have to pick and choose sorry!

Hmmm.... that is certainly a possible way of doing it. I worry about the processor load scanning the chat channels and, of course, if they are already online when you come online then they won't light up.

Good idea though.
What about scanning at fixed intervals ... say every 60 seconds or some factor of that, that would reduce the running total on accumulating too much cpu and ram ... maybe a tuneable value based on the end-users knowledge of their system.

I am wondering, with the added ability to read chat channels, will you now add a feature to tell who is online and perhaps highlight that name (or thier main) in the list?

I dont know the lua code to well, but reading chat for the "Your friend NAME has come online" then comparing it with the names listed in Alt Tracker should be possible.

Thanks for a great plugin

Oh don't worry, it's fine now. I just kept writing procedures that crashed lotro as they got stuck in an infinite loop. All fine now. Just have to learn not to code whilst half asleep!

It may very well be that I just forgot to try having it merge two groups. Will give it another look later. That comment worries me a bit, though, considering my machine isn't known for its stability either...

Hmm... like a windows explorer dialog? Yes, do-able. But a BIG job!
Hmm, not so much a windows explorer thing, in my mind at least. Just two fields in the character details for name pre- and suffixes, respectively, and having a toggle to display the entry in the master list either name only or "Prefix Name Suffix". No table display or something like that.

This is more of a "when I get a chance" sort of thing - and I am not confident of any time for a while now.
Of course, that goes without saying.

Hmmm.... maybe....

Yup, easy...

Do-able...

Related to that, I haven't found a way to associate names later on without re-entering them yet. In case you realize that this char and their four alts and that char and their four alts are actually the ten alts of the same player...

It would also be nice if the name entries would accept spaces, so surnames or titles could be entered. Alternatively, some fields in the characters' specific data to add those, and optimally build the list display from those.

Got a chance to try it now, and it's awesome!

Nothing in the world that couldn't be improved even more, though! In that spirit, a few usability suggestions:

First, the text window to enter a new name. Would it be possible to pre-position the cursor in the input field and make it process the input on press of 'Enter'?

The sorting of the list:
  • The 'Add new character' entry could be moved to the top of he list, or turned into a button outside of it - I had it move outside the visible window pretty quickly, as the window proportions seem a little smaller than the space needed to display the list.
  • An option to sort the list as it is now or after mains only, with alts only shown on unfolding the main's entry (new database field so a name can be marked as main, could be marked such when entered from the first list level) would help reducing numbers of displayed names.
  • Related to that, I haven't found a way to associate names later on without re-entering them yet. In case you realize that this char and their four alts and that char and their four alts are actually the ten alts of the same player... (don't laugh, speaking from experience there!)
  • It would also be nice if the name entries would accept spaces, so surnames or titles could be entered. Alternatively, some fields in the characters' specific data to add those, and optimally build the list display from those.

Some of these suggestions might not be possible with the API as it is now, but you will be a better judge for that. I'll add more as I think of it

For now, I'm very happy to finally have a chance to keep track of who's who - thank you again!

Woohoo, I have something named after me - I'm famous! Now, peasants, get back to work on improving your plugins. *cracks whip*

Thank you for the update. Will try it as soon as it passes admin review!

Okies. Hopefully fixed now!

Note that the base turbine code needs to be installed.

(Unless using Bootstrap. Or at least - it worked on my system without Turbine if Bootstrap was installed).

I have seriously messed up with this update - I rushed in too quickly to add a new function and changed the layout code.

Please Do NOT download this till I publish an update - is there any way I can remove this plugin from the list for now?

Well, I certainly don't have 2048 friends, but an alt tracker can be useful not only for a list of those... I also like to remember passing acquaintances and even idiots that don't fit on /ignore anymore. That's exactly where your plugin fills a much-needed niche!

Or, at least it would, if I got it to load properly. Complains about ShowWindow() and nil values (line 20 or 33 in main.lua, depending on load schema)... No matter if I load it standalone or with my complete plugin setup. Unfortunately I never got my brain wrapped around C-style syntax, so cannot fix it myself.
Dammit, dammit, dammit.

That's the trouble when you write a new plugin. Will look into this tomorrow if I get the chance.

Damn.
