Currently I have a bug in the latest version of TerrainMap (1.15) when trying to display the Mordor map at x8 or above scales (the game crashes). In lower zoom levels it's about just fine.
Thanks for the work on TerrainMap and thank you for updating the maps

Hi, this may be a memory issue with the client. What OS are you running and how much RAM does your machine have?

I use Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1, and I have 8 GB of RAM.
Hope that helps

Thanks. I should have also asked what resolution you play at and which screen mode (Full Screen, Windowed or Windowed Full Screen) you use and whether you use the Hi-res textures.

Cape of Belfalas

Hello - I notice that the Cape of Belfalas (new housing area) is neither on the Mordor map or the Gondor map. Could you add that please?

Thanks for reporting this. Actually, Cape of Belfalas is on the Gondor map and displays correctly at zoom levels 1-2 with (or without) annotations. Unfortunately I did miss updating the pre-zoomed tiles for this area and the overview so while it exists, it shows as the old green "artist markup" version in zooms 4-32. This will be fixed in the next release but is a fairly low priority at this time since it does work in zoom 1-2 and can be selected from the higher zooms, it just looks odd in the higher zooms. I am still looking into the report of a game crash using zooms 8-32 in Mordor but that is looking like a memory issue in the Turbine client rather than a bug in TerrainMap. The most likely timeframe for an update would be early next month (i.e. after the new year).

Sorry for the late answer !
I use Hi-res files and played in Full Screen only (I have since switched to Full Screen Windowed but I haven't tried to set the zoom levels to x8 or higher in Mordor yet), in 1920x1080 resolution.

Map

I've enjoyed your map in game for quite some time. Is there, by any chance, a way to open the map outside of the game window? Perhaps in a browser or even as a static, hi-rez photo? Would love to have it up on my second screen, even if it doesn't show location or annotations.

Thanks for the comment. Using the map assets outside the client would require prior written permission from the copyright holder, Turbine. Unfortunately, when Turbine ceased supporting their online Google map, I approached them about hosting one myself (the assets used in the game are 200x200 pixels which makes them perfect for the Google map API) as a fan supported site and they declined.

Static pictures may be a slightly different issue, perhaps because they are derived works, and seem to be acceptable - at least nobody has complained about the existing ones as far as I know. Several static versions of the map have been produced from the plugin by others, a couple of them linked in prior posts in this thread. You can pretty easily create your own static map by splicing together screenshots of the plugin, it just takes a little time and patience.

At this time, especially since I no longer even really play the game, I do not have the resources to devote to any new LOTRO projects and only allocate enough time to maintain my existing plugins for new content.

Re: Re: Re: Map

Hello,

Thanks for that excellent plugin! Playing with it I was just wondering if displaying the quests indicators was something you planned or if it was just not possible with the api?

Cheers,
Dunn

Hi, thanks for the comment.

Unfortunately, Quest and Deed info are not exposed to Lua so there is no practical way to add quest tracking. Some quest locations, NPCs and items that can be added as static annotations do sometimes get added (they show as POIs, NPCs or quest rings) if they are found to be significant enough (the criteria is quite arbitrary depending on my mood as I capture annotation data in the course of adventuring...)

I don't have any plans to add custom annotations to TerrainMap but MoorMap does allow users to add custom annotations so perhaps you would find that useful. MoorMap also supports Overlays which could be used by enterprising users to develop their own quest and deed maps - TerrainMap can not support Overlays efficiently.

im working on hi-rez images, just need couple more days, i dont use any scripts, so all work is screen capture and manual merge, composition and check.

i cant offer 1:1 scale because of bandwidth and winGDI32/InternetBrowsers/ fileformat support but individual regions will be down-scaled to about 8K resolution and whole LOTRO world to about 12K resolution [25% resolution of original scale]

I tested to display the Mordor map at x8 zoom level and it worked (in Full Screen (Windowed)), no crashes.
Maybe that can only occur in Full Screen mode...

While processing the images for the U20 update I finally realized why you were probably running into a CtD with Mordor, particularly at zoom level 8. It is indeed related to the Turbine/SSG memory issue regarding not releasing images but was made worse by improper cropping of the zoom level 4 tiles for Mordor (the images were larger than they needed to be) which contributed to some crashes (zoom level 8 uses the level 4 tiles but scales them dynamically showing 4 times as many tiles at once which is why the crashes happened at zoom level 8).

The tiles will be reprocessed and considerably smaller with the next update so some of the CtD issue will be abated - I can't fix the underlying issue, only Turbine/SSG can fix the memory issue in their image handling but it will help most users. I can't give an accurate estimated time for publishing since I still have to gather default data for MoorMap and TerrainMap but hopefully in the next week or so.
