Description
This is a quick and dirty set of files I made to replace the obnoxious LOTRO Store ads that display when you first log a character in to the game with LOTRO concept art.

I did not create the artwork in this file, I just cropped and filled them where needed to display best on your loading screen. All art is by Tara Rueping from the blog located at http://truepaint.blogspot.com/.

Unzip this file into your <LOTRO DIR>\raw\en\logo directory.

If the mood strikes me I may make a more elaborate set.

Just an FYI: I don't really play LOTRO anymore. Finally got sick of the attempted double dipping and blatant lying from Turbine. I'll refrain from mentioning what game I moved to since this is a LOTRO site and I wouldn't want to cause a Rift.

Hello friends. I have been banned from the official forums for pointing out where Turbine has lied about the store. Yes, that was the reason given. lol

I don't intend to include a batch file or exe to automate this process, but anybody who wants to feel free to upload an add-on to this. Hell, take the files and create your own if you like, this art isn't mine after all. I just resized and added borders where needed.

The batch is indeed a good ideea, but as a programmer, i prefer to make an exe which offers a lot more flexibility.
Actually, i just finished a much improved version of what i posted below which offers to possibility to add any number of pictures.. 1 or 100. If more than 10 are added to the list, then 10 will be randomly chosen to replace the adds for the current session. And more features.. will go into details when i release it after i finish testing for bugs. When done, i will post it as a patch or addon to this replacement and i will provide full source code for anyone who wants to check it out.
For those who are "too paranoid" (sry ignotus, your words not mine), consider this: turbine can have my ip both from the website and game (i use same name on forum as in the game) and i even say on what server i play in the help of the application. Should anything "malicious" be found i'd be "toast". If my word is not enough to be trusted, then maybe this is

The US client doesn't appear to be replacing images unless you start the (Bullroarer) BR client and then come back to the live client. With BR going live yesterday, this is going to affect a few people.

I was going to come here and recommend something similar to this exe. I'm too paranoid to be running an unknown executable before I log into LOTRO. What I'm thinking is that some person that's better than me with DOS or the command line could write a simple batch file/script that will copy the files from a "replacements" folder into the \raw\en\logo folder when executed. For example, you create a folder within \raw\en\ named "replacements". You copy your replacement images into that folder. Then you copy the batch file into that folder too. Then create a shortcut to the batch file on your desktop. Now, when you execute the launcher, it will replace your images and then present you with the login prompt. At this point you execute the batch file and it copies your replacement images into the \raw\en\logo folder and terminates. Then you log in as normal. It's just one extra button to press. I like the idea of a batch file because even a noob like myself can open a batch file in Notepad and see what it does. I may try to figure out a very crude way of doing this myself.

EDIT: OK, I'm a total noob, but I was able to make a batch file that works on my system (XP). It is VERY simple, just 3 lines. You can do the same thing and just change the installation directory in the batch file to wherever your LOTRO is installed. What I have is a folder on my desktop named whatever you want to name it. Inside that folder is all 11 replacement images, including lotro_ad_pregame.jpg. Put your batch file inside that folder with the images. Then right click the batch file and create a shortcut on the desktop. Now if you start BR and then go back and start the live client, you'll get see a message that it's downloading the proper images from Turbine. After it downloads them, just a couple seconds, you'll be presented with the login prompt. At this point you can double click your shortcut to the batch file that is on your desktop. The batch file will copy all files in the same folder as the batch file itself that start with the letters "lotro" into the folder that you specified in the batch file. For most people, this is something like C:\Program Files\Turbine\LOTRO\raw\en\logo or something like that. If there is a space in the path, ie. "Program Files", be sure to put quotes around the entire path like I did below for my BR path.

Copy this into Notepad and save it as whatever you want with a .bat extension. Put that in the same folder as your replacement images. Create a shortcut to it on your desktop. Run that shortcut whenever you want to copy your replacements into the \en\logo folder.

Code:
copy lotro* F:\Games\LOTRO\raw\en\logo
copy lotro* "F:\Games\LOTRO Beta\raw\en\logo"
EXIT
Someone that is only marginally better than me with a command line can probably write a script that can accept input and use a settings file. Have the script prompt the first time for the location of the images and the location of the \en\logo directories and save that info to a text file. Then it will run automatically thereafter and pull the paths from that text file. Probably all kinds of lipstick that you could put on this pig to make it more attractive. It does what I need though, it copies my images into the proper locations with 1 double click.

The Lotro launcher automaticaly checks if the right files are there and if not they are re-downloaded.

This little application that i made will fix this problem.
Download: No_adds.rar

i suggest it is added into the main package of the add replacer

HOWEVER, the first add when starting the game (just after loging in), remains the same, because
the source of that picture is elsewhere.. so every add will be changed except that one.
So please don't come and say it doesn't work before actually logging a character to test it

Readme is included in the rar, but here is a copy / paste of it:

Quote:
Instalation:
Extract the program to "<<Lotro instalation folder>>\raw\<<locale>>\logo"
Also in the logo folder create a folder named "original" and a folder named "personal"
Then copy your prefered images in the "personal" folder and the original ones in the.. "original" folder.

Finally, create / change your lotro shortcut to point at "no adds.exe" instead of "turbinelancher.exe"

Aditional information:
<<Lotro instalation folder>> - usually "C:\Program Files\Codemasters\The Lord of the Rings Online"
<<locale>> - your locale folder - usually "en" or "us"

Steps to play:
1) Click the ring to start the launcher.
2) When the launcher has finished checking
the files and you are able to log in, click
on 'Click here after Lotro Launcher has
finished checking the files'.
3) Play.

Explanation:
Clicking the ring copyes the original adds
to where they will be used by the game,
then starts the launcher. After the launcher
checked the files and saw the adds are ok,
you click on the other button which replaces
the adds with your personal pictures.

PS. By the way, If you start up your Bullroarer client (I did recently just for kicks but server was down of course) and then return to regular LOTRO client, your ads get returned/redownloaded.
So that explains it then. I accidentally clicked the wrong icon and started the Bullroarer client briefly. When I went back and loaded the live client, it showed me the EULA again, it then downloaded the old ads, I had to choose my server, and I had to retype my username. I was wondering what was up.

EDIT: Interesting, I just accidentally started Bullroarer again. This time, when I started the live client (5:30am EST USA Jan. 21) it downloaded the fall festival ad for lotro_ad_pregame.jpg. I deleted it and ran the launcher again and it downloaded the fall festival picture again. Odd... I also deleted my shortcut for Bullroarer. I'm not accidentally clicking it again. I had them both side by side in the quick launch area next to the start button. If I need Bullroarer, I'll just find it in the start menu.

Hmm well that sucks. If the EU client is already checking/replacing its probably only a matter of time before the NA client does. Bummer.

These are just fantastic. Exactly what I needed to top off the nostalgic feel that I was looking for.

Thank you.

EDIT: As a side question, has anyone figured out if you can have more than 10? If not then I'll add in an 11th and see if it gets added to the rotation.

Mine does not do that. I'm at work right now so I can't look at my own launcher, but look for a launcher option that says something about verifying your files every time you start the launcher.

Mine did not even update with the patch on Monday.

I saved them all. The ones I put into this pack are the ones that would most easily convert to the 1024x512 size the ads were.

If I make more it will consist of those others too.

It's actually real easy to do so I wouldn't be surprised if people start doing it on their own. I'm also curious if more then 10 are possible or not. Turbine only made 5 and doubled them in the directory.

We'll see if Turbine insists this file gets taken down, but the information is out there now at least.
