This is where you choose the skin you want to use.

Description
This is an extremely simple skin which makes the main map smaller and changes it to a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Since I first uploaded this I learned that many other skins provide this function. However, they do a lot of other things, too. If you want to use the default LOTRO interface skin but just want a smaller main map, this skin will do that for you.

---------- ---------- ---------- ----------

The main map as it defaults in LOTRO fills the entire screen. This can be nice for smaller screens but it prevents the player from seeing anything other than the map whenever the map is being displayed. And unlike many other UI elements, the game does not offer, by default, any way to adjust the scaling of the main map.

In addition to the size issue, the main map's data is actually in a 4:3 aspect ratio but since it fills the entire screen and this is no longer 2007, your screen is probably a wide-screen aspect ratio, most likely 16:9. This distorts the main map making regions appear to be shaped different than they really are and making text harder to read because of the stretching.

This skin adjusts the size of the map so that it fills an area just a bit larger than the upper-left quadrant. With the map open you can still see the entire right half of your screen (which is most likely where you have your quest tracker), the bottom third (where your skill bars are most likely placed), all or most of your chat window (if it's in more-or-less the default position at bottom-left), and enough of the rest so that you can steer your mount through the landscape while examining the map. The aspect ratio is 4:3 which allows all the map data to be displayed "as intended" and makes the text easier to read because the stretching is eliminated.

I have experimented with different values for WIDTH and HEIGHT within the SkinDefinition.xml file but have not achieved satisfactory results.

Note that three different skins are included with this download:
1- SmallerMainMap, which is the very simple skin I developed for my own use and decided to share with the community on lotrointerface.com.
2- LargerDressingRoom, which is based on Wicky71's "Larger dressing room window" skin which itself is based on Brygard's "Dressing Room eXpanded" skin.
3- LDR-SMM, which combines the functionality of both SmallerMainMap and LargerDressingRoom into a single skin.

I use LDR-SMM myself because I don't like the main map filling up my entire screen and I enjoy being able to examine outfits in more detail with the larger dressing room frame.

---------- ---------- ---------- ----------

To learn how to install and enable a skin for LOTRO, please read the very good instructions here:
https://www.lotrointerface.com/forums/faq.php?faq=lotro_interface#faq_installation
In addition to these instructions, I've found that after choosing the skin I want from the in-game menu I sometimes have to log out the character and then log it back in for the change to take effect. It's also important to add the skin to the skins folder while the game is not running, and you'll need to quit and relaunch the game in order for any edits you make to the SkinDefinitions.xml file to be recognized.

The code used here is extremely simple so if you want to use it for your own more complex skin or add it to a skin compendium, please be welcome to do so. If you like this simple stand-alone skin as it is, please do not remove this readme file if you share or distribute this skin.

Thank you!

Thank you very much for this. The maps look terrible when stretched. Hard on the eye, texts hard to read, hard to follow character marker. With your version, it looks just better.

Thumbs up A Fine Plugin.

Ooo! Thank you so much for this plugin. This is just what I'm looking for: default game skin + a smaller map. Ty!

Eclipse is the person who decompiled the game to look into its code and found in it the tweak which allows to get the map no more full screen.
This code was originally a part of the outdated skin EclipseUI.

I'll figure out how to move this to the correct category.

What or who is Eclipse?

Hi, this is posted in plugins section but it is a skin, not a plugin.

I think you've forgotten to credit Eclipse for its "windowed map" code.

People looking for more panel tweaks can have a look to https://www.lotrointerface.com/downl...cedpanels.html

There must be some leftover in the addons that I have installed and carefully configured (Titanbar, Deed tracker, Turbine Utilities and where to play) because the problem ONLY disappears if I remove all of them.
Did you follow the instructions in my last message? Here they are again, written more explicitly:
1- Be sure the game is not running.
2- Install all your plugins, your "favourite skin" and SmallerMainMap.
3- Launch the game.
4- At the character selection screen, use the Plugin Manager to enable your plugins for the character you will log in during Step 5.
5- Log in the character you selected in Step 4.
6- Go to OPTIONS->UI SETTINGS->MISC and choose your "favourite skin" from the dropdown menu.
7- Click ACCEPT at the bottom of the OPTIONS window.
8- Test to see if your map is back to full screen by invoking the main map.
9a- If the main map is back to full screen, you are done.
9b- If the main map is not back to full screen, log the character out and log it back in again; then test the main map again.

If you follow those steps and the main map is not back to full screen, report back here and I will offer some additional suggestions.

It is possible that one of the addons you are using changes the main map size. That would explain why "the problem ONLY disappears if I remove all of them." Try disabling them one at a time to find out which one it is.

Use the Plugin Manager to enable and disable the addons, do not remove them from your */The Lord of the Rings Online/plugins folder. Use the UI Settings panel to choose the skin you want, do not remove them from your */The Lord of the Rings Online/ui/skins folder.

I can assure you that whatever is going on, it is not the fault of this extremely simple skin. It cannot possibly write variables or do anything other than have its own parameters read and those only change the behavior of the in-game main map. I use SmallerMainMap myself, and I use a few plugins alongside it; and have no trouble enabling or disabling any of them individually or in any combination.

There's nothing special about the SmallerMainMap skin, it's the same as any other skin in terms of how it's installed, how it's enabled and disabled, and how it's removed.

Install your "favourite skin" and SmallerMainMap. Do that while the game is not running. Then launch the game, get into the game, log in a character, and go to the UI Settings panel to choose your "favourite skin" from the dropdown menu. If it doesn't immediately take effect, log out the character then log it back in.

While the LOTRO game engine allows only one skin definition file to be active at a time, you can add the code from SmallerMainMap to your "favourite skin" with just a little copy-paste editing of the .xml file of your "favourite skin" – then you can get the benefit of both simultaneously.
