Notes for all:
We just finished moving all of our sites to new servers. If you notice anything not working the way it should be, please let us know. Notes for authors: One of the things that has changed, in part due to the move although not completely, is that we are going back to our old policy of only allowing .zip files for uploads. Going forward we will no longer accept .rar files. If you already have a file on the site that is a .rar, we will allow it to stay as such. However, all updates and any new uploads will have to be in the .zip format. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. |
can I ask why? I mean obviously it's not that big a deal, but isn't .rar a much better compression format?
|
I've always preferred .rar to .zip, seems an odd restriction to put in place.
|
It can be due that hackers or crackers or what ever they are, they tend to include virus and trojans in rar format then zip.
Currently it might not be related to this site but right now hackers are really pissed of at the USA cause couple days ago Megaupload has been shut down by the supreme court. And currently their attacking websites and MMOUI is common grounds to attack,it has been attack before. I think thier just taking precoutions. |

That being said, although I'm probably just speaking from bad experiences from years ago, that it would be nice if MMOUI supported a more robust format - whether that be 7zip, or even good ol' fashioned tar balls. Even still, I would imagine that since they are the ones forcing this change, that they'd be more than prepared to set things up appropriately. |
The reasons are actually a lot simpler than you guys are making them out to be.
First, the majority of users out there are using Windows (and even more so for LotRO since it is a Windows only game) and a .zip extractor comes standard with Windows. They don't have to go find a .rar extractor to install. On that same note, the majority of users get a .rar file and have no idea what it is or how to deal with it. They understand .zip files though. They would be completely lost if they saw a .7zip or .tar extension! The second reason, to be completely honest, is actually purely for our own convenience. It's easier for us to check a .zip file than it is to check a .rar file. There is a plugin we can use on our sites that allows us to look inside a .zip file without having to download it. There isn't an equivalent plugin for .rar files. Maybe not the most 'noble' of reasons, but there it is. :p |

Plus, even though LotRO is technically a Windows-only game, it is worth pointing out that both Mac OS X, and Linux also natively support the .zip file format. So even those who are playing LotRO via WINE (or its derivatives) on those systems, won't be forced to look for a special app. |
