The grey boxes appear when files are missing. This most likely means you have somehow installed the skin in a wrong way (haven't extracted all the files in their designated places for example).

Make sure all the files from the skin you're trying to use are extracted as the skin author has instructed. Generally you have to extract the files in
  • XP: <drive>:\\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online\UI\Skins\
  • Vista/7: <drive>:\\Users\<username>\Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online\UI\Skins\
Some skins might also be outdated and not work any longer. Which skins are you trying to use ?

Alright. Then I know the skins you're trying should work properly.

The current downloadables I have uploaded are compressed with RAR (not ZIP any longer). In some cases the the extracting software might be outdated and corrupt the files. Try using the latest WinRAR for example (http://www.rarlab.com/).

I have another scenario for you. I just started playing and want to install addons. I followed the instructions on the addon site to no prevail. Then i saw your post. Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online\UI\Skins\ does not exist on my computer.....

I went as far as Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online ............

In that folder there is two files..... lotro.keymap and UserPreferences.ini.
I chose the option to "Show Hidden Files" and still just these two files only.
Then i searced the whole computer for a folder named "Plugins".
Nothing...
Please help me find this folder. I am up for remote access if your into that.

You need to create MyDoc\Lotro\UI\Skins\ and MyDoc\Lotro\Plugins\ directories yourself. they aren't created by the client.
